150 was founded in 1933 as a medical institute due to urgent needs in medical personnel in the developing Volga and Ural region of Russia. There was only one faculty at that time, the Faculty of General Medicine. In 1983 the institute was awarded the Order of Peoples’ Friendship for the achievements in training highly skilled specialists. In 1995 the institute was renamed Izhevsk State Medical Academy (ISMA). The oldest faculty is the Faculty of General Medicine. It was founded in 1933. The students master three main specialties: Surgery, Therapy, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Then comes the Faculty of Paediatrics which was established in 1975. It has two main specialities: Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery. In 1980 the Faculty of Dentistry was opened. It trains students in conservative, restorative, operative, prosthetic, maxillofacial and paediatric dentistry. There are two more faculties which deal with postgraduate training and pre-academic training (preparatory courses for applicants). The first one was established in 1991 and the second one – in 1992. Each faculty is headed by a dean. Nowadays medical training has a differentiated system including preparatory courses for applicants, basic undergraduate education and postgraduate (professional) training. The academy, like all Russian higher educational institutions, is headed by a rector. About 2,000 full-time and part-time medical students from all parts of Russia and abroad study at Izhevsk State Medical Academy. During the first three years students study preclinical subjects and in their senior years they master clinical subjects and undergo practical training at teaching hospitals of Izhevsk. The classrooms and laboratories are well equipped with computers for students to study medicine. The staff is about 400 members including faculty members, librarians, laboratory technicians who work at 52 departments. Among them there are about 80 Doctors of Medical Sciences and more than 250 Candidates of Medical Sciences who give lectures and hold seminars at 30 teaching hospitals of Izhevsk. Seventy seven per cent of faculty members have scientific degrees. The academy is a well-known scientific centre. Research is carried out in many fields: Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Therapy, Surgery, Gynаecology, Obstetrics, and other fields of medicine.
