There are about 150,000 prac‑ ticing dentists in the United States for the population of 220 million.According to some surveys dentistry is the third most trusted profession in America. The contemporary degree of doctor of dental surgery opens different career pros‑ pects. About 90% of dentists work in private practice. 70% of them work in solo practices and the others are members of practice groups (20% work in a practice with one other dentist; about 10% work with two or more dentists). Career opportunities are also available in the armed forces, public health administration, business and industry, dental research and education. 80% of active dentists are engaged in general practice. There are eight recognized dental specialties in the US today. They are: • oral and maxillofacial surgery – the art and science of diagnosis, surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries, defects and esthetic aspects of the oral and maxillofacial area;
